UPCOMING WORKSHOPS

“This week was trajectory-changing. It opened up spaces in my brain that I have returned to again and again.” – L.O.

I’ve been teaching memoir and personal narrative to writers of all skill levels since 2011. I teach courses of varying length: single-day, five-day, and multi-week. I also facilitate three ongoing groups of writing students that meet on Zoom weekly to share work, receive feedback, and talk writing and reading. These groups are currently full.

If you don’t see a course below that fits your needs, please check back; I update this page frequently. If you’d like to arrange a workshop for your organization or school, please contact me.

June 24-28, 2024: FOOD AS A DOORWAY TO MEMORY, Madeline Island, WIsconsin

In-person, at the beautiful Madeline Island School of the Arts campus on Lake Superior. Our week at MISA coincides with two other workshops — improvisational quilting, and floral painting — and the cross-pollination that results makes this location a favorite of mine.

August 25-30, 2024:

Food as a doorway to memory, COLORADO

In-person, at the Nature Conservancy’s stunning Zapata Ranch, in Mosca, Colorado. After 2024, the ranch will no longer host guest stays and events like this, so if you’ve thought about signing up in previous years, this is the last chance. Join me for five nights on the ranch, horseback riding every other morning, writing, and discussions of what makes writing work — plus astounding meals, sand dunes, bison, and good company.

october 29 - November 15, 2024: FROM MEMORY TO STORY, ONLINE

On Zoom, hosted by Santa Fe Workshops. Due to demand, we’ve added this fall session! In this small-group workshop (12 students, max), we’ll practice tapping into memories, rebuilding scenes from the past, and writing vividly from within them.

Tuesdays and Fridays, 9:30-11:30am Pacific

APRIL 12-19, 2025: WRITING TO RESTORE, FRANCE

In-person at Clos Mirabel, in Jurançon, France.

A writing-based creative retreat, a chance to restore your writer-self at an idyllic 18th-century manor house in the French Pyrenées. Literal stuff of dreams.

“I've taken writing classes on and off over the years and have rarely experienced the talent in facilitation and teaching that you brought to us. You created a safe supportive space immediately and made everyone, no matter where they were in their writing, feel welcome and encouraged. I also really appreciated your practical tips and showing your own processes; it made the writing process feel attainable, rather than a secret only a lucky few get to unlock.”—B.G.
